Spine Road is trying out rolling submissions. Mainly because we publish so irregularly. Expect a response time between 1 & 4 months.

Guidelines:

1) Save your submission in an acceptable format: we take PDF, DOC, DOCX (PDF is preferable).
2) choose your category of submission
3) either sign-up for a submishmash account or sign in
4) list your titles separated with commas in the TITLE box
5) attach your submission by browsing your computer's files
6) in the BIO or COVERLETTER box, tell us about yourself: your previous publications, any writing classes or programs you've attended, any teaching or awards. Anything that would be helpful situating you within a particular writing community. If you're not into bios, that's cool.
7) doublecheck everything & then hit send.
8) wait nervously for weeks, checking your hair repeatedly in the mirror, taking baths, setting & resetting your living room furniture. straighten any crooked photo frames in the house.

Thanks in advance for considering Spine Road; we know how much hard work is put into writing, and it means a lot to us that our tiny little online magazine was even a consideration to you.

POETRY

(pdf, doc, docx, jpg, gif, mp3)

Size limit: 8-15 pages

Although we highly value prose poems & block texts, we love poetry, any poetry: as long as it's good, well-edited, and loved or hated (nothing in between).

Generally speaking, we're publishing the extended work of only a few writers. For poetry, we hope to publish 3-4 writers, each with a larger space to explore a project, a voice, etc. The idea here is to provide a pre-chapbook space for your work to hang out in.

PROSE

(pdf, doc, docx, jpg, gif, mp3)

Size limit: 20-40 pages

Prose, to us, includes fiction & creative non-fiction, as well as oddly spliced genres. We especially value the uncanny, the bizarre, the surreal. Short, poetic narratives are always enjoyable. But, again, any good writing is good. Which means we'll publish anything that strikes our fancy that may not fit these perimeters. No, wait: parameters.

Generally speaking, we are seeking to publish the extended works of only a few writers. For prose, that means we'll be running 2-3 writers each with a larger space to explore.

BOOK REVIEWS & INTERVIEWS

(pdf, doc, docx)

Size limit: 1000 words

We want reviews of books published by small presses within the last year or 2. Length doesn't matter, as long as it's not unreasonably long. 750 words, let's say. Please, no book reports. Interesting, poetic reviews are the most highly valued.

ESSAYS

(pdf, doc, docx, jpg, gif, mp3)

Size limit: 30 pages

We don't want book reports, essays from lit theory, strict literary criticism, histories of X, or classic journalistic writing. We do want cultural criticism. Future segments will discuss Freudian overtones found in 80s sitcoms. What does Foucault say about American Idol? Why are hipsters the end of the western civilization? In the future American Revolution, whose head should be cut off first: Bert or Ernie. Politics. Sociology. Economics. Class structures. Consumerism. Faux spirituality. How do these abstractions manifest themselves in the everyday American life? Think Chuck Klosterman, but a bit more heady. And be creative: faux business plans, suggested corporate logos, comic strips. Or don't be creative, and submit a standard piece of journalism that fits within the outlined boundaries. And remember: you're not above this culture, you're a part of it. So stop with your elitist bullsh*t, find what's interesting about the world around you, and write about it for Spine Road. Do some push-ups you lilly-livered coward.

VISUAL

(pdf, doc, docx, jpg, gif, mp3)

Every so often, we'd like to publish some visual content. This is likely to occur when we get work that makes us want to weep, tear our garments, throw ash upon our heads in mourning.
